Understanding Tokenized Stocks: A New Paradigm for Equities

Tokenized stocks are digital representations of real-world shares, designed to offer economic exposure to underlying assets within a blockchain environment. When you acquire a tokenized stock on GM Markets, you are gaining a standard on-chain (ERC-20) asset that tracks the value of a traditional equity. You can learn more about this innovative asset class on our tokenized stocks page.

Our model is built on a 1:1 backing principle. Each token we issue is precisely collateralized by an actual share held in a segregated customer account at a regulated broker-dealer, such as Interactive Brokers or Alpaca Markets. This means that for every tokenized share of NVIDIA, AMD, or TSM you hold, there is a corresponding real share held securely in custody on your behalf. These underlying shares are kept separate from our own funds, adhering to investor-protection arrangements.

We ensure the integrity, transparency, and value of these tokens through independent attestations. Accountable, a third-party proof-of-reserves provider, reads broker balances directly and publishes them on-chain in real time. This allows for continuous verification of our reserves against the token supply, visible on our Proof of Reserves page. Our smart contracts have also been audited by firms such as Sherlock, Halborn, Cantina, and Cyfrin, further enhancing security and trust.

Accessing Tokenized Semiconductor Stocks on GM Markets

Gaining exposure to tokenized semiconductor stocks on GM Markets is designed to be permissionless and straightforward. Our onboarding process allows users to connect via an external wallet, Google, or an email magic-link, bypassing many traditional gatekeepers. This approach enables global access to US-listed equities without requiring a conventional brokerage account.

Once connected, you can deposit funds efficiently. We support stablecoins, with USDF serving as our unified balance backed 1:1 by USDC and USDT across various chains. For fiat deposits, we offer convenient rails such as Apple Pay, card, or bank transfers. Gas fees are abstracted; our smart account pays native gas and bills the equivalent in USDF from your balance, meaning you never need to hold a native chain token or worry about gas lines.

Trading tokenized semiconductor stocks on our platform utilizes a Request-For-Quote (RFQ) system. Regulated market-making partners quote prices against the live underlying market, and trades settle back-to-back on acceptance. This ensures institutional liquidity at the spot price. Our transparent fee structure, detailed on our pricing page, ranges from 10 to 20 basis points (0.10% to 0.20%), with the default being 20 bps and dropping to 10 bps at our top VIP tier as 14-day trading volume grows. This fee is included in the quoted price, so the "You will receive" line is final.

We currently offer tokenized semiconductor stock tickers such as NVIDIA (NVDA), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM). For example, on July 1, 2024, NVIDIA (NVDA) closed at a price of $124.10. For Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), the closing price on July 31, 2024, was $144.48. These historical figures illustrate the dynamic nature of the market.

The Advantages of On-Chain Semiconductor Exposure

Tokenized semiconductor stocks on GM Markets offer several distinct advantages over traditional equity exposure, particularly for global investors seeking efficiency and flexibility.

A globe surrounded by interconnected, fragmented tokens, symbolizing global access, fractional ownership, and DeFi composability.

Global Accessibility

Tokenization fundamentally overcomes geographical barriers. Many retail investors outside the United States face friction or restrictions when trying to access global equities. Our permissionless platform provides a direct pathway for investors worldwide to gain economic exposure to the US equity market, including high-demand semiconductor companies, without needing local brokerage accounts or navigating complex international transfer systems.

Fractional Ownership

High-value semiconductor stocks can be expensive to acquire as whole shares. Tokenization enables fractional ownership, allowing you to trade from a minimum of $1. This capability democratizes access, making it possible for investors to build diversified portfolios with smaller capital allocations, gaining exposure to multiple semiconductor giants without buying full shares of each.

DeFi Composability

Unlike traditional shares locked in brokerage accounts, our tokenized stocks are standard ERC-20 assets. This means they are inherently composable within the decentralized finance ecosystem. You can use your tokenized NVIDIA, AMD, or TSM shares as productive capital: lending them on platforms like Aave, where Aave V4 is designed to facilitate the lending of tokenized securities, and Aave Horizon already supports qualified investors borrowing stablecoins against tokenized real-world assets. Alternatively, platforms like Morpho currently support tokenized ETFs as collateral, allowing users to borrow stablecoins against their positions. You can also supply them as liquidity on decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap or CoW Swap, or use them as collateral in various DeFi protocols. While GM Markets does not offer a proprietary "Stocks Earn" program, the inherent composability of our ERC-20 tokenized assets enables users to explore these and other yield-generating opportunities across the broader DeFi ecosystem. Additionally, our referral program allows users to earn a share of platform fees generated by their referrals.

Real-time Settlement

On-chain settlement offers significant improvements in efficiency and transparency compared to traditional market delays. Trades executed on GM Markets settle on-chain across supported networks like Base, Arbitrum, Ethereum, and Optimism, often in near real-time. This reduces counterparty risk and provides immediate confirmation of ownership transfer, offering a modern alternative to the multi-day settlement cycles of conventional markets.

Total-Return Model

For tokenized stocks on GM Markets, we operate a total-return model for dividends and corporate actions. Instead of separate cash payouts, dividends are reinvested into the underlying shares, which then increases the token's on-chain Net Asset Value (NAV). This simplifies economic exposure, as the value accrues directly to your token's price. Similarly, other corporate actions such as splits, spin-offs, or mergers are absorbed into the NAV, ensuring your position accurately tracks the underlying asset's economic performance without requiring additional action on your part.

While tokenized semiconductor stocks offer compelling opportunities, it is essential to understand the associated risks and considerations. We aim to provide clear information to help you make informed decisions.

Market Volatility

Semiconductor stocks, like all equities, are subject to market volatility. Their value can fluctuate significantly due to technological advancements, supply chain disruptions, geopolitical events, and broader economic trends. The value of your tokenized holdings may go down as well as up, and you may lose money.

Tokenization Risks

Specific risks are inherent to tokenized assets. These include smart-contract risk, where vulnerabilities in the underlying code could be exploited; counterparty risk, related to the entities involved in custody and market making; and custody risk, concerning the security of the underlying shares and your embedded wallet. While we employ robust security measures, including multi-party computation (MPC) wallets operated by Privy and multiple smart contract audits, detailed on our security page, these risks cannot be entirely eliminated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the fees for trading tokenized semiconductor stocks on GM Markets?

Our trading fee ranges from 10 to 20 basis points (0.10% to 0.20%), depending on your 14-day trading volume through our VIP ladder. The default is 20 bps, dropping to 10 bps at the highest tier. This fee is included in the quoted price, and deposits and withdrawals are free. Gas fees are abstracted and billed in USDF from your balance.

Do I receive voting rights or other shareholder privileges with tokenized shares?

No, our tokenized stocks provide economic exposure to the underlying shares, meaning you benefit from price movements and dividends (via NAV appreciation). They do not convey shareholder voting rights or other traditional corporate privileges associated with direct share ownership. However, recent developments, such as Ondo Finance's partnership with Broadridge, are exploring ways to provide voting rights and corporate communications for tokenized US securities within existing regulatory frameworks.

How is the security of my tokenized assets and my embedded wallet ensured?

Your tokenized assets are held in an embedded wallet operated by Privy, utilizing multi-party computation (MPC). This means no single party, including GM Markets, holds the complete private key. Authentication uses biometrics or passkeys, and trades/withdrawals above $10,000 trigger a second factor. The underlying shares are held in segregated customer accounts at regulated broker-dealers, and our smart contracts are regularly audited by leading firms.

What happens to my tokens if GM Markets discontinues operations?

A designated security agent has standing authority to act on behalf of token holders. If GM Markets discontinues operations, this agent works directly with the custodian to redeem outstanding tokens against the underlying shares. This redemption path is enforced by the on-chain contract and is independent of our operational status, ensuring your claim on the underlying value.

How do dividends and other corporate actions work for tokenized stocks?

We use a total-return model. Dividends are reinvested into the underlying shares, which in turn increases the token's on-chain Net Asset Value (NAV). You receive the economic benefit of the dividend through the appreciation of your token's value, rather than as a separate cash payout. Similarly, corporate actions such as stock splits or mergers are absorbed into the NAV, ensuring your economic exposure remains consistent with the underlying asset.
